The main contributors to the river flow are the Yakima, Cle Elum and Naches Rivers. Flow is regulated by the Bumping Lake, Cle Elum Lake and Kachess Lake dams. The flow is highly seasonal with peak flows occurring in May-June and low flows in August-September. Interestingly, the Yakima River supports a diverse array of fish species including salmon, steelhead, and bull trout. The river also has unique geological features such as basalt columns and a natural arch formed by erosion.
