Built in 1956 by the USDA NRCS, this earth dam stands at a height of 30 feet and stretches 800 feet in length. Its primary purpose is to serve as a Fish and Wildlife Pond, providing essential habitat for local wildlife and offering recreational opportunities for visitors.
With a storage capacity of 872 acre-feet, Sulligent Dam is fed by Indian Creek and covers a surface area of 70 acres. Despite its low hazard potential and moderate risk assessment, the dam has not been rated for its condition. The spillway, with a width of 70 feet, is uncontrolled, allowing excess water to flow out in times of heavy rainfall. Even though it has not been inspected since 1979, the dam continues to play a crucial role in supporting the ecosystem and providing a tranquil setting for outdoor enthusiasts in the West Suburb of Sulligent.
Although not regulated by the state, Sulligent Dam remains a vital feature in the local landscape, showcasing the intersection of water resource management and environmental conservation. As a significant contributor to the region's water supply and wildlife habitat, this structure serves as a testament to the importance of sustainable infrastructure development in mitigating the impacts of climate change on our natural surroundings.
