Viva Naughton is a privately owned dam located in Lincoln, Wyoming, with its primary purpose being water supply. Constructed in 1967 by the Bechtel Corporation, this earth-type dam stands at a height of 90 feet and has a hydraulic height of 68 feet. It stretches 3200 feet in length and has a storage capacity of 42,200 acre-feet, serving a drainage area of 235 square miles.
The dam also serves multiple purposes, including flood risk reduction, hydroelectric power generation, irrigation, and recreational activities. Its controlled spillway, with a width of 35 feet, can handle a maximum discharge of 12,000 cubic feet per second. However, Viva Naughton has been classified as having a high hazard potential and a very high risk assessment rating, emphasizing the importance of regular inspections and emergency preparedness measures.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission oversees the regulation and inspection of Viva Naughton, ensuring its safe operation. Despite not being state-regulated, the dam plays a crucial role in water resource management in the region, highlighting the intersection of water supply infrastructure and climate resilience in the face of increasing risks and challenges.
