Built in 1850, this dam serves multiple purposes including fire protection, stock, and small fish pond, but its primary purpose is for recreation. With a height of 10 feet and a hydraulic height of 8 feet, Sleeper has a normal storage capacity of 3600 acre-feet and a maximum storage of 4200 acre-feet, covering a surface area of 2050 acres within a drainage area of 34 square miles.
Despite its historical significance and recreational value, Sleeper dam is currently in poor condition and has been deemed to have a significant hazard potential. The last inspection in September 2016 revealed its poor condition, and its Emergency Action Plan (EAP) has not been updated recently. The dam is state-regulated, with inspection, permitting, and enforcement conducted by the Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). With its unique location and historical importance, Sleeper dam presents challenges in managing its risk and ensuring the safety of the surrounding community and environment.
