Harberts Dam, is a privately owned structure located in Kent, Maryland. Completed in 1963, this earth dam stands 14 feet tall and spans 660 feet along Stillpond Creek. Its primary purpose is flood risk reduction, with a storage capacity of 359 acre-feet and a drainage area of 3.8 square miles.
Despite its significant hazard potential, the dam is currently in poor condition, as assessed in April 2021. Inspected every three years, the last assessment in June 2021 revealed its deteriorating state. The dam features an uncontrolled spillway with a width of 63 feet, capable of discharging up to 2224 cubic feet per second in case of overflow.
With its moderate risk rating and enforcement by the Maryland Dam Safety agency, Stillpond Creek Dam serves as a critical flood control structure in the region. As climate change intensifies, the maintenance and upkeep of this dam become increasingly vital to safeguarding the surrounding communities and environment from potential water-related disasters.
