Shady Lake, also known as Oronoco Lake, is a gravity dam located in Olmsted County, Minnesota. Managed by the local government, the dam was completed in 1937 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). With a height of 26.5 feet and a hydraulic height of 10 feet, Shady Lake serves as a significant water resource for the area, storing a maximum of 1248 acre-feet of water and covering a surface area of 204 acres.

The dam on Shady Lake poses a significant hazard potential and has been assessed to be in poor condition. Despite its poor assessment, the dam is regulated by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and is subject to regular inspections and enforcement measures. With a very high risk ranking, it is crucial for authorities to closely monitor Shady Lake and implement necessary risk management measures to ensure the safety and integrity of the structure.

Given its historical significance and importance as a water resource in the region, Shady Lake is a key feature of the Zumbro River Middle Fork watershed. With its controlled spillway and Tainter (radial) outlet gates, the dam plays a crucial role in managing water flow and providing flood protection for the surrounding areas. Water resource and climate enthusiasts are encouraged to stay informed about the condition and management of Shady Lake to support sustainable water management practices in the region.
