Located in Marathon, Wisconsin, Wausau is a gravity dam on the Wisconsin River that was completed in 1930 and serves multiple purposes, including hydroelectric power generation and recreation. Designed by L. A. De Huere, this structure stands at a height of 29 feet and has a storage capacity of 2800 acre-feet. With a maximum discharge of 102,000 cubic feet per second and a controlled spillway width of 525 feet, Wausau offers both operational efficiency and safety measures to manage water flow.

Managed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Wausau features a Tainter (radial) outlet gate system with seven gates. Despite its low hazard potential, the dam is considered to have a very high risk due to its age and the potential consequences of failure. While the condition assessment is not available, regular inspections are conducted every three years to ensure the structure's integrity. Wausau's location at the heart of Wausau city makes it a significant landmark for water resource and climate enthusiasts interested in the interplay between infrastructure, environmental conservation, and community development.
