Historically, the river was used by indigenous people for transportation and fishing, and later by European explorers and traders. The river is fed by several tributaries and flows into the Slave River delta, ultimately draining into Great Slave Lake. The area surrounding the river is rich in natural resources, including minerals and oil, and several hydroelectric dams have been built along its course. The largest of these is the W.A.C. Bennett Dam, which creates Williston Lake, the largest reservoir in British Columbia. The dam provides hydroelectric power to the region and also supports agricultural irrigation. Recreational activities such as fishing and boating are popular on the Diamond River and its reservoirs.
