Its headwaters start in Norton and flow through Taunton before meeting the Taunton River. The river has a rich history, once being an important source of power for the textile industry in the 19th century. Today, the river is used primarily for recreation and agriculture. The river has two main reservoirs, the Lakeville and the Norton Reservoir. These reservoirs provide drinking water to several towns in the area. The river also has several dams, including the Whittenton Dam which was built in 1836 to power a mill. Recreational activities include boating, fishing, hiking, and birdwatching. Agriculture in the area is centered around cranberry bogs which rely on the river for irrigation.
