Summary

A free backcountry permit is required, and reservations are strongly recommended via Recreation.gov. There are no fees beyond park entry. Amenities are minimal: no toilets, water, fire rings, or picnic tables—campers must pack out all waste. RVs are not permitted. Set atop the Chisos Mountains, the area boasts dramatic desert and canyon views, ideal for solitude and stargazing. Nearby East Rim and South Rim Trails offer some of the park’s best hiking. Best visited October–April for cooler temps and clearer skies.
