...HEAVY SNOW EXPECTED FOR THE PANHANDLE THIS WEEKEND... .A large system moving in from the southwest will bring the next round of substantial, long duration, snowfall across the panhandle this weekend. This first front moving through will push over the Yakutat area late Friday night then over the rest of the panhandle Saturday. This is followed quickly by another surge of moisture and warmth from the south that will continue the precipitation Sunday and Monday. Snow levels will steadily rise across the central outer coast and south Saturday night causing a change over to rain. The rain/snow line then shifts northward to Icy Strait and the Juneau area on Sunday, bringing a mix or chance of freezing rain. The rain/snow line wavers in this area through Monday. Please stay tuned to future updates on this impactful storm. * WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 24 to 45 inches. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph. * WHERE...City and Borough of Yakutat. * WHEN...From midnight tonight to 6 AM AKST Monday. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult and is not advised. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Any mixing with rain or freezing rain at times would result in lower snowfall totals. There is potential for snow to continue through Monday.
