ESFSEW A series of atmospheric rivers will provide rounds of increasingly impactful rainfall starting today and continuing through next week. Snow levels will fluctuate around 4500 to 6500 feet. Expect rising rivers with potential for flooding especially for rivers flowing off the Olympics and Cascades. Urban flooding and landslides are also possible throughout this period as the soil conditions remain wet.
The headwaters of the river begin in the Olympic National Park, and the river includes all tributaries to the confluence with the Queets River. The ideal streamflow range for the Whitewater River is between 800 to 2000 cfs, with the best conditions often being in the early summer months.
The river is rated class III to IV, with some sections reaching class V during high water periods. The segment mileage of the river is approximately 12 miles. There are several rapids and obstacles along the river, including "The Notch," a narrow and technical section, as well as "The Slot," a steep drop with a large hole at the bottom.
Regulations for the Whitewater River include a permit system for commercial outfitters and a requirement for all boaters to have a personal flotation device (PFD) and a helmet. Additionally, campfires are not allowed in the Olympic National Park, which includes the headwaters of the Whitewater River.
Overall, the Whitewater River is a challenging and exciting destination for experienced kayakers and rafters. However, it is important to follow all regulations and safety guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
