Boyd Site overview
Boyd Site
One of the most significant features of the Boyd Site is a series of mounds that were constructed by the Mississippians. These mounds were used for various purposes, such as religious ceremonies, burials, and even the homes of the ruling elite. The mounds are relatively well-preserved, and visitors can see them up close.
Aside from the mounds, the Boyd Site also features a reconstructed village that provides visitors with a glimpse into the daily life of the Mississippians. The village features several structures, including a council house, a granary, and a winter house. Visitors can learn about the tools, clothing, and food of the Mississippians and even participate in hands-on activities, such as pottery-making or weaving.
Visiting the Boyd Site is an excellent way to learn about the history of Illinois and the Mississippi culture. It is also a great opportunity to explore the beauty of the region and see some of the unique natural features, such as the forests and the river. Whether you're a history buff or just looking for a fun and educational day trip, the Boyd Site is definitely worth a visit.

Responsible visitation & Leave No Trace
- Know before you go
- Check the operator's site (BLM, NPS, state agency, or private owner) for access rules, permits, and seasonal closures before driving out.
- Stay on trail
- Many points of interest sit in fragile ecosystems. Stick to marked paths to protect vegetation and prevent erosion.
- Respect wildlife
- Observe from a distance, never feed wildlife, and give nesting birds and denning mammals plenty of space.
- Pack it in, pack it out
- Take all trash, food scraps, and gear back with you. Remote sites often have no trash service.
- Leave what you find
- Don't take rocks, plants, fossils, or artifacts. Federal law protects cultural and natural resources on public land.
