The river is fed by several tributaries, including the Embarrass River and several other smaller streams. There are several dams along the river, with the nearest one located in Princeton, WI. Seasonally, the flow of the river is highest during spring when snowmelt and precipitation are the highest, while it is lowest during summer and fall. Interestingly, the Fox River was once used for transportation by Native Americans and European settlers, and was a major center for the fur trade in the 1800s.
