The river's primary flow provider is the Peshtigo Lake, a small lake that feeds into the river. The river has several tributaries, including the Popple River, which flows into the Peshtigo near Wabeno. There are no major dams on the river. The flow of the river is highest during the spring snowmelt and precipitation events. Interestingly, the Peshtigo River is known for being the site of the deadliest wildfire in U.S. history, which occurred in 1871 and burned over one million acres of land.
