The Yahara River is a tributary of Lake Mendota and is fed by several smaller creeks and streams. The river has been dammed at several points to create reservoirs for recreational use. Seasonal trends show higher flows in the spring due to snowmelt and rain, and lower flows in the summer and fall. Interesting facts include the presence of several species of fish, including bass and northern pike, and the river's role in helping to regulate the water levels in Lake Mendota.
