The river's flow is influenced by melting snow and rainfall, which are heaviest in the spring and early summer, and decrease in the fall and winter. Several smaller tributaries join the Wind River along its course, including the Little Wind River and the Popo Agie River. There are several dams along the Wind River, including the Boysen Dam and Reservoir.
