Olympus, located in Larimer, Colorado, is a Federal-owned hydroelectric dam on the Big Thompson River with a primary purpose of generating hydroelectric power and providing irrigation water. Built in 1948 by the Bureau of Reclamation, this Earth-type dam stands at a height of 70 feet and has a hydraulic height of 45 feet, with a storage capacity of 3068 acre-feet. The dam's spillway, a controlled type, is 23 feet wide, allowing for a maximum discharge of 21200 cubic feet per second.
With a Hazard Potential rating of High and a Risk Assessment indicating Very High risk, Olympus is subject to regular state inspection, enforcement, and permitting by the Colorado Division of Water Resources.
