Headgate Rock is a Federal-owned irrigation dam located in La Paz, Arizona, along the Colorado River. Built in 1941 by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, this Earth-type dam stands at a structural height of 70 feet and spans a length of 1975 feet. With a primary purpose of irrigation, Headgate Rock has a normal storage capacity of 7025 acre-feet and features a controlled spillway.
Despite its age, Headgate Rock has a high hazard potential and is classified as being in very high risk, with a risk assessment rating of 1. While the condition assessment is not available, the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) was last revised in 2012. The dam is under the jurisdiction of DOI BIA and is subject to inspections every 5 years. With its prominent location on the Colorado River and importance for irrigation, Headgate Rock remains a key water resource structure in the region, highlighting the intersection of water management and climate resilience in the face of potential hazards.
