Nuti Storage Dam

May 4, 2024

Nuti Storage Dam, located in Lyon County, Nevada, serves as a critical water resource for irrigation purposes. Built in 1963 by USDA NRCS, this earth dam stands at 28 feet high and spans 1200 feet in length, with a storage capacity of 50 acre-feet. The dam, situated on Desert Creek-OS, also provides fire protection, stock watering, and small fish pond support.

With a low hazard potential and fair condition assessment, Nuti Storage Dam has undergone modifications in 1984 to enhance its hydraulic capabilities. The dam features an uncontrolled spillway, one other controlled outlet gate, and a slide (sluice gate). Despite its moderate risk level, the dam is regularly inspected by Nevada DWR, demonstrating a commitment to ensuring its safety and functionality for the surrounding community.

In the event of an emergency, the dam's Emergency Action Plan is yet to be prepared or updated, presenting an area for improvement. However, with its sturdy construction and consistent state oversight, Nuti Storage Dam remains a vital infrastructure for water storage and distribution in the region, showcasing the importance of responsible water resource management and climate resilience efforts.
