The dam was built in 1956 and stands at a height of 142 feet, with a capacity of 25,600 acre-feet. It is a concrete gravity dam that primarily stores water for irrigation and domestic use in the Oxnard Plain. The dam is fed by runoff from the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Ojai Valley. The main surface water provider for the dam is the Ventura River, which has a total basin area of 226 square miles. The dam also receives water from snowpack melt in the mountains during the winter. The water stored in the dam is used for irrigating crops such as strawberries, celery, and lettuce. Recreational activities such as fishing and boating are also popular in the area.
