1, also known as Pleasant Valley Neighborhood Group, is a privately owned dam located in Red Wing, Minnesota along the Cannon River. Built in 1969 by the USDA NRCS, this earth dam stands at a height of 29 feet and serves the primary purpose of flood risk reduction. With a storage capacity of 27 acre-feet, it plays a crucial role in managing water levels in the region.
Managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Peaceful Valley Group No. 1 has a low hazard potential and is deemed to be in satisfactory condition as of the last inspection in December 2015. Despite its modest size and uncontrolled spillway, the dam remains an essential structure for the local community's safety and water resource management. With a drainage area of 0.7 square miles, the dam can handle a maximum discharge of 300 cubic feet per second during peak flood events.
Although the dam has not been modified in recent years, regular inspections are conducted every 8 years to ensure its continued functionality and safety. With Angie Craig as the local Congressional Representative, the community can rest assured that measures are in place to mitigate potential risks and protect the surrounding areas from flooding. Peaceful Valley Group No. 1 stands as a testament to the importance of effective water resource management and climate resilience in the face of changing environmental conditions.
