Located in McCool Junction, Nebraska, the Weiss Road Dam serves as a critical infrastructure for flood risk reduction along the TR-W FK BIG BLUE RIVER. Built in 1979, this earth dam stands at a height of 19 feet, with a hydraulic height of 15 feet and a length of 600 feet. It has a storage capacity of 106 acre-feet, providing essential protection to the surrounding area.

Managed by the local government and regulated by the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources, the Weiss Road Dam has been deemed to be in satisfactory condition as of the last inspection in April 2018. With a drainage area of 0.6 square miles and a maximum discharge of 34 cubic feet per second, the dam plays a crucial role in safeguarding the community from potential flooding events. As climate change continues to impact water resources, the Weiss Road Dam stands as a vital structure in mitigating flood risks and ensuring the safety of residents in York County.

Designed by Leland Jackson of the USDA NRCS, the Weiss Road Dam exemplifies the collaborative efforts between government agencies and local communities to address the challenges posed by climate change. With its primary purpose of flood risk reduction, this earth dam continues to be a cornerstone in water resource management and climate resilience efforts in the region.
