Hunters Run Structure No.
3 is a critical flood risk reduction infrastructure located in Lancaster, Ohio, along the Hunters Run river. Built in 1960 by the USDA NRCS, this earth dam stands at a height of 27.1 feet and spans 1100 feet in length, providing storage capacity of 1781 acre-feet. Despite its age, this dam is still in operation and regulated by the Department of Natural Resources in Ohio, with regular inspections carried out every five years.
The dam's primary purpose is flood risk reduction, and it is designed to handle a maximum discharge of 4010 cubic feet per second. However, recent assessments have shown that the structure is in poor condition with a high hazard potential. With a moderate risk rating of 3, there is a pressing need for maintenance and potential upgrades to ensure the safety and effectiveness of this vital water resource infrastructure. The local government is responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of Hunters Run Structure No. 3, and efforts are underway to address the identified issues and mitigate the risks associated with this aging dam.
