Willow is a gravity dam located in Tomahawk, Wisconsin, along the picturesque Tomahawk River. Built in 1927 for hydroelectric purposes, this dam stands at a height of 34.5 feet and has a storage capacity of 67,126 acre-feet. With a drainage area of 310 square miles and a maximum discharge of 12,800 cubic feet per second, Willow plays a crucial role in flood risk reduction and power generation in the region.
Managed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Willow is considered to have a high hazard potential due to its age and structural characteristics. Despite its age, the dam has not undergone recent inspections, and its condition assessment is currently unavailable. However, the dam is equipped with a controlled spillway and three Tainter gates for efficient water release. With its rich history and significant impact on the surrounding environment, Willow remains a vital piece of infrastructure in Wisconsin's water resource management system.
Although Willow faces potential risks due to its age and hazard potential, efforts are being made to ensure its safety and proper functioning. With its historical significance and role in flood risk reduction and hydroelectric power generation, Willow stands as a testament to the engineering marvels of the past and the ongoing efforts to maintain and manage water resources in the face of changing climate conditions.
