Manke is a privately-owned irrigation dam located in Edgemont, SD, along Little Alkali Creek in Wyoming. Built in 1950, the Earth-type dam stands at 27 feet high and 575 feet long, with a storage capacity of 447 acre-feet. Despite its low hazard potential, the dam's condition assessment is poor as of the last inspection in August 2019.
With a primary purpose of irrigation, Manke also serves fire protection, stock, and small fish pond needs in the area. Although it is regulated and inspected by the State of Wyoming, the dam's condition raises concerns about its long-term sustainability. As a key structure in the region's water resource management, efforts may be needed to address the poor condition assessment and ensure the safety and functionality of Manke for the community's water needs.
As climate change continues to impact water resources and infrastructure, the maintenance and upkeep of dams like Manke become increasingly important. With Liz Cheney serving as the Congresswoman for the area, there may be opportunities for federal support or funding to improve the dam's condition and ensure its resilience in the face of changing climate patterns. Collaboration between state and federal agencies, as well as local stakeholders, will be crucial in safeguarding Manke and its vital role in the water supply system of the region.
