About this resort

Huff Hills

Huff Hills ski resort in North Dakota offers 20 runs, with the best trails being the black diamond runs such as Timberline and Ridge Run. An interesting fact about the resort is that it was originally built by the Bismarck Ski Club in the 1950s, with the first ski lift being a rope tow powered by a Model T engine. For beginner skiers, the Easy Street run is recommended, with a gentle slope and easy access to the beginner area. The best apres ski bar is the Saloon, located in the base lodge, offering drinks and snacks in a cozy atmosphere.

Terrain mix: The Huff Hills Ski Resort in North Dakota is located within the Turtle Mountains, which is a small mountain range in the northern part of the state. The highest point in the Turtle Mountains is Mount Rattler, which reaches an elevation of 2,130 feet. Despite being relatively low in elevation compared to other mountain ranges, the Turtle Mountains provide a unique skiing experience in North Dakota. Huff Hills Ski Resort offers a variety of runs and trails for all levels of skiers and snowboarders, as well as stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Issued at 249 PM CDT Sun Jul 12 2026 An upper level ridge continues to dominate the upper level pattern across the Plains and the Rockies. This has brought widespread hot temperatures into the Northern Plains. The low level thermal ridge is centered across eastern Montana. This will cause temperatures to warm across western North Dakota to around 106 to 109 degrees this afternoon with the central and northern half of the state seeing 100 to 105. The central and eastern half of the state has dew points in the 60s to lower 70s leading to heat index values of 105 to 110. There is also a high chance of breaking record high temperature for Bismarck, Dickinson, Williston, and Minot for today and tomorrow. Tonight low temperatures are forecast to drop down around 70s potentially breaking record high low temperatures for the same locations. Hot temperatures will continue into the start of the week. The low level thermal ridge will slide eastward as the upper high centers over the Northern Plains. High temperatures Monday are forecast to be around 100 to 105 with the hottest spots being the southwest and the south central. A cold front is forecast to sag across the northwest leading to high temperatures in the 90s for Crosby. The upper level ridge will dampen this week across the Canadian Prairies. This will lead to multiple waves traversing across southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba. There are low chances of showers and thunderstorms by the middle of the week into the weekend across the northern half of the state. The upper level ridge will persist across the the Plains through the weekend. 100 degree temperatures are forecast across the southern half of the state through the middle of the week. After that, above normal in the upper 80s to upper 90s are forecast to persist into the weekend. && .AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z TUESDAY/... Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Huff Hills

Where does the snow data for Huff Hills come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Huff Hills?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Huff Hills?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
