A free backcountry permit is required—reservations can be made through the National Park Service. There are no fees beyond the park entrance pass. Amenities are minimal: no toilets (cat holes required), no water (bring all you need), no fire rings/grills, and no picnic tables. RVs are not permitted. Nestled in a scenic desert landscape with views of saguaro-studded slopes and high ridges, it’s a 6.9-mile hike via the Tanque Verde Ridge Trail. Best visited October–April for cooler temps and stunning sunsets.
