Permits are not required outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), but if entering BWCAW, a free self-issued permit is needed. There are no fees for dispersed sites. Amenities are minimal—expect rustic, primitive conditions with no toilets (bring a trowel), no potable water (filter from nearby lakes/streams), and no picnic tables or hookups. Some sites include fire rings. The forested, remote setting offers solitude and access to scenic trails and overlooks. Best visited late spring to early fall for ideal weather and trail conditions.
