Townsend camping area is a serene and peaceful escape located in the Piney Woods region of East Texas. The camping area is surrounded by the beauty of nature, with the nearby Sam Rayburn Reservoir providing a stunning backdrop for visitors. The area is also home to numerous hiking and biking trails that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding woods and waters.

Nearby points of interest include the Angelina National Forest, which is only a short drive away and offers visitors the chance to explore the natural beauty of the region. In addition, the area is home to several historic sites, including the San Augustine Mission, which dates back to the 18th century.

The campground amenities include 60 campsites with water and electric hookups, a dump station, and a bathhouse. The campground is a first-come-first-serve basis, so visitors are encouraged to arrive early to secure a spot.

An interesting fact about the area is that it is home to the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, which can be seen in the nearby forests.

The best time of year to visit Townsend camping area is during the fall, between October and November, when the temperatures are mild with average highs in the mid-70s and lows in the mid-50s. However, visitors should be aware that the area can be quite humid during the summer months, with temperatures reaching into the high 90s.
