Another round of heavy rain is moving into the central and southern
panhandle early Tuesday morning along with warming temperatures.
This may expand localized flooding.
* WHAT...Flooding caused by rain and snowmelt continues to be
possible.
* WHERE...The following areas, Southern Inner Channels and Central
Inner Channels. This includes the cities of Gustavus, Juneau,
Petersburg, Kake, Port Alexander, Wrangell, And Hyder.
* WHEN...Through this evening.
* IMPACTS...Excessive runoff from rainfall and snowmelt may result
in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, other low-lying areas and
flood-prone locations. Area creeks and streams are running high
and could flood with more heavy rain. Flooding may occur in poor
drainage areas.
Heavy rain falling on the existing snowpack will lead to increased
runoff. Ponding of water may occur where storm drains or culverts
are blocked by ice and snow. Rain falling on the hard pack snow will
lead to icy conditions.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- Rainfall amounts since the change over from snow have been 1
to 2 inches for Juneau, Gustavus, and Kake, upwards of 3
inches in Petersburg and Wrangell, and lesser amounts so far
in Hyder.
Heavy rain will move back into the region through early
Tuesday morning. New rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches
expected through Tuesday evening. Additionally, freezing
levels will rise to around 6,000 feet Tuesday afternoon.
- Storm drains should be kept clear of debris and snow as much as
possible.
