Half Dome peak
Half Dome rises to 8,842 ft in Sierra-Nevada within the Sierra Nevada range.
Standing at an elevation of 8,842 feet (2,695 meters), it offers breathtaking panoramic views of Yosemite Valley and the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountains. Its distinctive shape, resembling a half-dome, is a result of glacial and erosional forces over millions of years.
During the winter season, Half Dome is often covered in snow. The snowpack range varies from year to year, depending on the overall precipitation levels. Snow can accumulate on the dome, making it more challenging to climb and requiring specialized mountaineering equipment. As spring arrives and temperatures rise, the snow melts, creating cascades and waterfalls that flow into nearby creeks and rivers. Some of these include Tenaya Creek, Merced River, and Illilouette Creek, which receive runoff from Half Dome and contribute to the park's diverse ecosystem.
The name "Half Dome" originated from its unique shape, first coined by Josiah Whitney during the California Geological Survey in 1865. The native Ahwahneechee people also have legends and stories associated with the formation. According to one myth, the creator of the world, known as Ah-wah-nee, used an obsidian blade to shape the rock into its distinctive form. Today, Half Dome remains a popular destination for hikers and climbers, attracting adventurers from around the world who seek the challenge and beauty this iconic mountain offers.
