The ideal streamflow range for this run is between 400-1,000 cubic feet per second (cfs), with peak season being from late May to early July. The run is considered a Class III-IV, with some sections reaching Class V difficulty. The total segment mileage is around 46 miles, starting at the confluence of the Colorado and Green Rivers and ending at the town of Hanksville.
One of the most notable rapids on the Dark Canyon run is Satan's Gut, a Class IV rapid located around mile 12. Other notable features include Big Drops I and II, which are also Class IV rapids located around mile 26. In addition to the rapids, there are also several waterfalls and narrow canyons that add to the scenic beauty of the run.
