The creek is a tributary of the Colorado River and is fed by numerous springs and snowmelt from the surrounding mountains. There are no major dams on the creek, however, natural barriers such as beaver dams can affect its flow. Seasonal trends show that the creek's flow is highest in the spring due to snowmelt and decreases during the summer months. Interestingly, West Divide Creek was the site of a major environmental disaster in 2004 when a natural gas drilling operation contaminated the creek with benzene and other toxins. The incident resulted in a lawsuit and extensive cleanup efforts.
