April 30, 2024

Hot Springs No 2, located in Elmore, Idaho, is a privately owned dam primarily used for irrigation purposes. Built in 1968, this earth and stone dam stands at a height of 41.3 feet and has a capacity of 5334 acre-feet. It spans a length of 8100 feet and is situated on Hot Spring Creek and Bennett Creek, with a drainage area of 20 square miles.

Despite being regulated by the Idaho Department of Water Resources, Hot Springs No 2 has a high hazard potential and is classified as being in fair condition. The dam features a controlled spillway with a width of 42 feet and a maximum discharge of 100 cubic feet per second. The last inspection in July 2019 found the dam to be in fair condition, with an inspection frequency of every 2 years.

With its strategic location and critical role in irrigation, Hot Springs No 2 serves as an important water resource in the region. However, its high hazard potential underscores the need for continued monitoring and maintenance to ensure the safety and sustainability of the dam for both agricultural and environmental interests.
