Upper Mountain Lake Dam

May 8, 2024

Upper Mountain Lake Dam, also known as Olsen Dam, is a local government-owned structure in Haverhill, New Hampshire. Constructed in 1963, this earth dam serves primarily for recreational purposes, providing a serene getaway for water resource and climate enthusiasts. With a height of 30.5 feet and a length of 660 feet, the dam impounds Waterman Brook, creating a surface area of 27 acres and a storage capacity of 499 acre-feet.

Managed by the NHDES Dam Bureau, the dam has a low hazard potential and is currently in fair condition, as assessed during the last inspection in October 2019. Despite its moderate risk level, the dam meets regulatory requirements for state permitting, inspection, and enforcement, ensuring the safety of the surrounding community. With a maximum discharge of 1640 cubic feet per second, the uncontrolled spillway with a width of 5 feet provides necessary flood control measures for the area.

Located in Grafton County, New Hampshire, Upper Mountain Lake Dam stands as a testament to responsible water resource management and serves as a valuable asset for both recreational enjoyment and environmental protection. As climate change continues to impact water resources, this dam remains a crucial infrastructure for preserving the natural beauty of the region and supporting sustainable water use practices.
