May 2, 2024

Hackberry Draw Site No. 1 Dam, located in Eddy County, New Mexico, is a key structure designed by the USDA NRCS for flood risk reduction along the Hackberry Draw river. Completed in 1966, this earth dam stands at a height of 26 feet and spans a length of 3320 feet, with a storage capacity of 2490 acre-feet. The dam's spillway, with a width of 770 feet, is uncontrolled and can handle a maximum discharge of 30700 cubic feet per second.

With a high hazard potential but a satisfactory condition assessment as of January 2019, Hackberry Draw Site No. 1 Dam is regulated and inspected by the Office of the State Engineer in New Mexico. It has undergone modifications in 2004 for structural enhancements. The dam is classified as having a moderate risk level, with emergency action plans in place since 2007. This critical infrastructure plays a vital role in protecting the surrounding Happy Valley community and managing water resources in the region.
