The reservoir is fed by the South Fork of the American River and several smaller creeks, and is surrounded by forests and mountain peaks. The hydrology of the area is largely influenced by snowpack, which provides water for streams and rivers during the summer months. The reservoir provides water for irrigation to nearby agricultural lands, and also serves as a popular recreational site for activities such as fishing, boating, and camping. The area is also home to diverse wildlife and serves as an important habitat for several species of fish, including rainbow trout and kokanee salmon.
