West Fork Big Creek Watershed Site W-8 is a flood risk reduction structure located in Ringgold County, Iowa.
Constructed in 2000 by the USDA NRCS, this earth dam stands at a height of 24 feet and spans 473 feet in length. With a storage capacity of 84 acre-feet and a normal storage of 21 acre-feet, this structure serves multiple purposes including fire protection, stock, or small fish pond, in addition to flood risk reduction.
Managed by the Iowa DNR, this dam on the TR- WOLF CREEK is designated as a low hazard potential structure with a moderate risk assessment. Although not currently rated for condition assessment, the structure is regularly inspected, permitted, and enforced by state regulatory agencies. The surrounding area boasts a drainage area of 0.3 square miles and a surface area of 4.4 acres, making it a crucial piece of infrastructure for water resource and climate enthusiasts interested in sustainable water management practices in the region.
