Frd No 13, also known as Little Delaware Mission WS Dam 13, is a vital infrastructure owned by a local government in Muscotah, Kansas. Completed in 1967, this buttress-type dam stands at a height of 31 feet and has a hydraulic height of 28 feet, serving primarily for flood risk reduction along the Brush Creek-TR. With a storage capacity of 145 acre-feet, the dam covers a drainage area of 145 acres and a normal storage of 44 acre-feet, helping to mitigate the risk of flooding in the area.

Managed by the Kansas Department of Agriculture and regulated at the state level, Frd No 13 has a low hazard potential and is currently not rated for its condition assessment. Despite being uninspected and lacking in emergency preparedness measures, the dam continues to provide essential flood protection to the Atchison County community. Situated in a picturesque location with a spillway width of 40 feet, the dam is a significant piece of water resource infrastructure in the region.

As water resource and climate enthusiasts, it is crucial to recognize the importance of structures like Frd No 13 in safeguarding communities from the impacts of extreme weather events. By understanding the design, purpose, and regulatory oversight of dams like this one, we can appreciate the efforts made to protect lives and property from the threats of flooding. As we continue to study and monitor such infrastructure, we contribute to the resilience and sustainability of our water resources in the face of a changing climate.
