Frd No S-1, also known as Walnut Creek Watershed Dam S 1, is a crucial structure owned by the local government in PADONIA, Kansas. Built in 1963 by the USDA NRCS, this earth dam stands at a height of 38 feet and serves primarily for flood risk reduction in the Spring Creek-TR area. With a storage capacity of 630 acre-feet and a normal storage of 113 acre-feet, the dam covers a surface area of 17.2 acres and has a drainage area of 2.58 square miles.
Despite its age, Frd No S-1 is considered to have a low hazard potential and moderate risk level. The dam features an uncontrolled spillway with a width of 40 feet and is regulated by the Kansas Dept. of Agriculture. While it has not been rated for its condition assessment, the structure has not been deemed unsafe for the surrounding community. With no outlet gates and a lack of emergency action plans in place, stakeholders may need to consider implementing risk management measures to ensure the continued safety and functionality of Frd No S-1.
