Frd No 1, also known as Upper Walnut WS Joint District No 33, is a local government-owned earth dam located in Butler County, Kansas. Constructed in 1976 by the USDA NRCS, this dam serves the primary purpose of flood risk reduction for the Turkey Creek-TR watershed. With a height of 42 feet and a length of 2150 feet, Frd No 1 has a storage capacity of 3677 acre-feet and covers a surface area of 54.9 acres.

Managed by the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Frd No 1 is regulated, inspected, and enforced for compliance with state standards. The dam has a high hazard potential and is currently assessed to be in fair condition. While no emergency action plan (EAP) has been prepared for this structure, inspections are conducted every 3 years to ensure its integrity. The dam is also equipped with a spillway width of 140 feet to manage excess water flow during heavy rainfall events.

For water resource and climate enthusiasts, Frd No 1 presents an interesting case study in dam infrastructure management and flood risk reduction. With its location in the Kansas City District and its history of construction and maintenance by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, this earth dam serves as a vital component of the local water management system. By understanding the design, purpose, and condition of Frd No 1, researchers and policymakers can gain valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with maintaining and operating dams in the face of changing climate conditions.
