The Big Sand Watershed Structure Y-32-19 Dam, also known as Hey Dam, is a local government-owned structure located in Greenwood City Center, Carroll County, Mississippi.
This Earth-type dam was completed in 1967 by the USDA NRCS and serves the primary purpose of flood risk reduction along Big Sand Creek. With a height of 33 feet and a length of 513 feet, the dam has a storage capacity of 378 acre-feet and a drainage area of 0.93 square miles.
Although the dam has a low hazard potential, its condition assessment in 2016 was deemed unsatisfactory. Despite this, the dam is state-regulated and subject to regular inspections, permitting, and enforcement by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. The dam features an uncontrolled spillway and outlet gates, and its last inspection date was in March 2016. The risk assessment for the dam is moderate, indicating the need for ongoing monitoring and risk management measures to ensure its safety and effectiveness in flood risk reduction for the surrounding area.
