Built in 1935 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), this earth-type dam stands at a height of 14 feet and stretches 1700 feet in length. It serves primarily for recreational purposes, offering a surface area of 24.2 acres and a storage capacity of 287.4 acre-feet.
Managed by the North Dakota State Water Commission, Arnegard Dam is regulated, permitted, inspected, and enforced by state authorities. Despite being classified as low-hazard with a moderate risk level, the dam has not undergone a condition assessment and is not currently rated. The spillway, with a width of 250 feet, is uncontrolled, and there are no outlet gates or associated locks with the structure. Additionally, the dam has undergone structural modifications in 1967.
With its historical significance and continued recreational value, Arnegard Dam stands as a testament to the ingenuity of the WPA and the importance of water resource management in North Dakota. Its presence on Timber Creek provides a serene setting for outdoor enthusiasts and serves as a reminder of the vital role dams play in providing both leisure and water management capabilities in the region.
