Fork Wpa, located in Ramsey, North Dakota, is a Federal-owned fish and wildlife pond designed by USFWS and regulated by NDSWC. Completed in 1996, this Earth dam stands at 9 feet high and has a storage capacity of 96.2 acre-feet. With a primary purpose of serving as a fish and wildlife pond, the dam's normal storage capacity is 45.2 acre-feet and covers a surface area of 20.5 acres.
Despite being rated as low hazard potential and not yet assessed for condition, Fork Wpa poses a high risk due to its high discharge potential. With a spillway type listed as 'None' and vertical lift outlet gates, the dam is designed to manage water flow efficiently. While the dam's structural integrity and hazard potential are noted, further assessments and risk management measures are needed to ensure the safety and effectiveness of this vital water resource in the region.
As a key structure in the Omaha District's water management system, Fork Wpa serves as a critical resource for wildlife conservation and habitat enhancement. With its location along the MAUVAIS COULEE-TR stream, this dam plays a crucial role in preserving the local ecosystem and supporting the diverse flora and fauna in the area. While the dam's risk assessment indicates potential challenges, ongoing monitoring and maintenance efforts are essential to safeguarding the surrounding environment and ensuring the long-term sustainability of this valuable water resource.
