Historically, the area was used for agriculture, but was later abandoned and became overgrown. In 1949, the Pennsylvania Game Commission purchased the land and restored the habitat for waterfowl. The area is now home to over 200 species of birds and attracts thousands of visitors each year for bird watching and hunting.
The hydrology of Middle Creek is influenced by the Pocono Mountains and Lake Wallenpaupack. The creek is fed by several small tributaries and snowmelt. Snowpack is an important source of water for the creek, which is closely monitored by the Game Commission. The area also has several wetlands, which help to filter pollutants and provide habitat for wildlife.
Agriculture is not a significant use of the area, but the Game Commission has implemented habitat management practices such as controlled burns and mowing to maintain healthy vegetation. Recreational uses include hunting, fishing, and hiking. The area has several trails and observation areas for visitors to enjoy the wildlife and scenery.
