S. Lake 12 Dam, located in Chesterfield, South Carolina, was completed in 1938 by the Department of Interior - Fish and Wildlife Service for the primary purpose of creating a Fish and Wildlife Pond. The dam stands at a height of 14 feet with a length of 300 feet, containing a maximum storage capacity of 154 acre-feet and a normal storage of 49 acre-feet. The dam is classified as an Earth dam with a stone core, designed to control the flow of Ham Creek with a maximum discharge capacity of 1430 cubic feet per second.
Despite being labeled as having a low hazard potential and fair condition assessment, the dam is considered to have a very high risk level due to its classification as a very high risk (1) based on the risk assessment conducted. The last inspection of the dam was carried out in October 2015 with an inspection frequency of every 5 years. The dam features a controlled spillway and other controlled outlet gates, allowing for efficient water control and management. The surrounding area has an inundation map prepared and emergency contacts updated to ensure quick response in case of any unforeseen events.
