Ethan is a state-owned earth dam located in South Dakota along the Twelve Mile Creek, with a height of 15 feet and a length of 750 feet. Built in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), this dam serves as a crucial water resource structure for the region, providing a maximum storage capacity of 402 acre-feet and a normal storage capacity of 210 acre-feet. The dam has a low hazard potential and is currently rated as not assessed for its condition.
Managed by the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Ethan is regulated, permitted, inspected, and enforced by the state. Its spillway is uncontrolled with a width of 30 feet, and it has a maximum discharge capacity of 1370 cubic feet per second. Despite its moderate risk assessment rating, the dam has not been assigned a Dam Safety Action Classification (DSAC) date, indicating a need for further risk management measures to be put in place. With its historical significance and vital role in water management, Ethan stands as a testament to the importance of maintaining and monitoring our water infrastructure.
