Constructed in 1935 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), this earth dam stands at a height of 20 feet and spans a length of 300 feet. It is situated on the tributary of Spring Creek and is regulated by the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR).
The dam has a storage capacity of 1,225 acre-feet and serves a drainage area of 44 square miles. With a spillway width of 145 feet and a maximum discharge of 6,448 cubic feet per second, Crompton poses a low hazard potential and has a moderate risk level. Despite being not rated for its condition assessment, the dam is inspected every three years to ensure its structural integrity and safety.
Managed by the state government, Crompton plays a crucial role in water resource management and flood control in the region. Its historical significance as a WPA project adds to its charm for water resource and climate enthusiasts interested in the intersection of infrastructure development and environmental conservation.
