Dunavant, also known as Ried Dunavant Dam, is a privately owned structure located in Pleasant Hill, Tennessee, specifically in Lauderdale County. Built in 1967 by the USDA NRCS, this Earth-type dam serves multiple purposes, including fish and wildlife pond, fire protection, stock or small fish pond, and recreation. With a hydraulic height of 10 feet and a structural height of 12.3 feet, Dunavant has a storage capacity of 95 acre-feet and a surface area of 8.8 acres, making it a valuable resource for the local ecosystem.
Despite its low hazard potential and moderate risk assessment rating, Dunavant has not been inspected since March 2017. The dam does not have an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) in place, and its condition assessment is currently listed as "Not Rated." Given its critical role in supporting fish and wildlife habitats, as well as providing recreational opportunities, it is important for stakeholders to ensure regular inspections and maintenance of Dunavant to mitigate any potential risks and safeguard its structural integrity for the future.
As a key feature along Campground Creek, Dunavant represents a vital component of the local water resource infrastructure in Tennessee. With its close proximity to the Memphis District and the oversight of the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Dunavant serves as a prime example of private ownership contributing to the preservation of natural habitats and recreational spaces. Enthusiasts of water resources and climate conservation should take note of Dunavant's significance and advocate for continued monitoring and management to ensure its longevity and sustainability in the years to come.
